August inflation print keeps Fed rate hike in play

Inflation held through August, the data showed, keeping a Federal Reserve interest rate increase as a live possibility for rate markets.

The Dow Jones consensus going into the release had expected the all-items consumer price index to gain 0.4% for the month, with the core measure, which excludes food and energy, seen posting a 0.2% advance.

Those figures set a specific bar. A 0.4% headline and 0.2% core are not the kind of reads that hand the Fed a clear case for inaction.

Policymakers tend to lean on the core because food and energy prices track supply shocks more than underlying demand; a 0.2% advance there describes price pressure holding rather than fading.
