Australia Forward Nestory Irankunda, Coach Tony Popovic Blast Referee Felix Zwayer After 2-0 World Cup Loss to United States

After Australia's 2-0 defeat to the United States on Friday, forward Nestory Irankunda and head coach Tony Popovic publicly criticized referee Felix Zwayer, accusing the German official of systemic favoritism toward the Americans.

Assistant coach Paul Okon added his voice to the complaints, specifically disputing a second U.S. goal confirmed by VAR that Australia felt should not have stood.

Irankunda and Popovic Accuse Zwayer of One-Sided Officiating Irankunda was direct in his assessment, telling reporters after the match that Zwayer was "having a stinker" and that calls were consistently directed toward the United States.

The forward acknowledged there was little else to say, but insisted that at a tournament level, a referee must account for both teams on the field.
