Nearly 7,000 murders over the last decade and a net population loss of 1.6 million residents since 2000 formed the backdrop for a public march through Chicago's South Side this weekend, organized by the Caldwell Foundation for Public Safety.
The event began at Morgan Park High School, close to where foundation founder Gianno Caldwell's brother Christian was killed four years ago.
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson were invited to join.
The numbers on the ground Bob Fioretti, the Republican candidate for Illinois Attorney General, cited current-year figures at the event: over 1,000 people shot in Chicago so far this year, 220 of them killed.
