Emanuel's Tel Aviv address flags end of unconditional U.S. support for Israel, putting defense subsidies in play

A formal address at the University of Tel Aviv on Wednesday from potential 2028 Democratic presidential candidate Rahm Emanuel put U.S.-Israel defense financing in focus.

Emanuel, who served as White House Chief of Staff to Barack Obama and later as the Biden administration's ambassador to Japan, argued in a speech exceeding 30 minutes that unconditional American support for Israel must end.

He called the alliance "at a crossroads" and proposed eliminating U.S. subsidies to Israel's defense budget. What Emanuel proposed The financing argument was blunt.

Emanuel said Israel should purchase American arms under the same financial terms and restrictions as any other ally that abides by U.S. law, rather than the subsidized access it currently receives.
