Buffalo's new $2.1 billion Highmark Stadium hosted its first regular-season game Thursday night, and the Bills handled the ceremonial duties without much difficulty, beating the Detroit Lions 41-31.
Josh Allen threw three touchdown passes and ran for two more, recording the fourth five-touchdown game of his career and his 90th regular-season win in nine seasons, a milestone reached by just three other quarterbacks in that span.
The facility officially opened last month and sits directly across the street from the Bills' former home. It was built with Buffalo winters as the central operational constraint.
Underground heating coils run beneath the natural-grass field to prevent freezing, roof sensors monitor snowfall and trigger what the Bills describe as the world's largest stadium snow-melt system, and a 360-degree canopy shields most of the 60,108 seats from wind.
