Landmark COVID Mask Mandate Study Drew CDC Backing Despite Critical Methodological Failures

A June 2020 study that the CDC used to underpin its mask mandate guidance — and that the Association of American Medical Colleges cited in its "Consensus Guidance on Face Coverings" — contained methodological errors serious enough to invalidate its core conclusions, according to a close review of the research design and available pandemic data.

The study examined 15 states plus Washington D.C.

between April 8 and May 15, 2020, and claimed that mandating face mask use was associated with declines in daily COVID-19 growth rates of 0.9 to 2.0 percentage points across windows ranging from one to 21 or more days after orders were signed.

Its authors estimated that these mandates averted more than 200,000 COVID-19 cases by May 22, 2020 — a figure now called into question.
