Senate Bill S.2134, a Massachusetts proposal to create a permanent 11-member Muslim commission with authority to recommend American Muslims for appointed state government positions, is advancing toward a Senate floor vote.
The bill cleared initial committee markups and votes and now sits in the Senate Ways and Means Committee. The standoff with Washington is already in view.
The bill's mandate The proposed commission would seat 11 Muslims, appointed by Democratic Governor Maura Healey and other state officials. Its formal charge covers business, economy, healthcare and other policy concerns.
The hiring directive is precise: the commission would "identify and recommend qualified American Muslims for appointive positions at all levels of government, including boards and commissions, as the commission considers necessary and appropriate," according to the bill's language.
