The August 4 Michigan Democratic Senate primary is in focus after candidate Abdul El-Sayed rejected the socialist label in a televised exchange with MS NOW's Jen Psaki on Tuesday, telling her he is "simply not a socialist" despite campaign ties to Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
El-Sayed, whose platform includes Medicare for All and a critique of monopoly and oligopoly market structures, faces Representative Haley Stevens in the Democratic contest.
Former Representative Mike Rogers is the presumptive Republican nominee.
The positioning argument El-Sayed described himself as a "capitalist who understands capitalism" while arguing the system fails when markets become monopolies or oligopolies, sectors where consumers are, in his framing, "forced" to participate.
