Mariah Thomas, 28, will spend 13 years in the Missouri Department of Corrections after pleading guilty to first-degree endangering the welfare of a child resulting in death.
The plea deal, reached Tuesday in Jackson County, resulted in the dismissal of a first-degree murder charge against the mother of Za'riah Thomas, a 1-month-old infant who died in February 2024.
The sentencing follows a criminal investigation that began when police found the child dead with severe burns inside a Kansas City home.
The incident occurred on February 9, 2024, when officers were dispatched to the residence around 1:30 p.m. following a report that a baby was not breathing.
