NYPD memorial wall dedicated as illness toll from September 11 service surpasses 469 members

The NYPD has lost more than 469 members to illnesses connected to their service after the September 11, 2001 attacks, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said during a ceremony this week dedicating a memorial wall at One Police Plaza.

The wall honors the 23 officers killed at the World Trade Center that morning, 14 of them from the emergency service unit, alongside members who have since died from related illness.

Chief of Department Michael LiPetri added that more than 1,700 members have retired from the department carrying World Trade Center-related disabilities. LiPetri said the toll is still accumulating.

"We are still losing members to illnesses caused by their service after the attacks," he said.
