Protect College Sports Act draws civil rights pushback as Senate final vote nears

The Protect College Sports Act, co-sponsored by Sens. Ted Cruz of Texas and Maria Cantwell of Washington, has cleared two key Senate hurdles and is tracking toward a final chamber vote within the coming week.

NAACP President Derrick Johnson, the Congressional Black Caucus, and Sen.

Chris Murphy have argued the bill would strip Black student-athletes of agency won under name, image, and likeness rules, returning control to coaches and college administrators.

Craig Robinson, executive director of the National Association of Basketball Coaches and a prominent supporter of the legislation, rejected that framing directly.
