Astera Labs (ALAB) released its Aries 7 signal-conditioning chips and Orion rack-scale reference design during a week when the stock fell more than 15%, following a broad sell-off in artificial intelligence equities. The company, which manufactures connectivity components for AI servers, reported the developments on October 8 and October 12, respectively, while trading on the Nasdaq.
The recent market decline was driven by a hot inflation report that raised expectations for higher borrowing costs, alongside warnings from Goldman Sachs CEO about debt accumulation in data center projects. Oracle shares fell approximately 9%, and Advanced Micro Devices dropped a similar amount. Super Micro Computer lost 23%, making it the worst performer in the S&P 500, while Palantir Technologies entered correction territory. AI software names collectively lost roughly $260 billion in value. CoreWeave's $50 billion in debt also drew attention, but the selling extended to companies without significant leverage.
Astera Labs makes retimers, switches, and cable modules that manage data signals between GPUs, CPUs, and memory inside AI servers. The company holds about $1.25 billion in cash and short-term investments and has no borrowings. Its recent product launches address specific infrastructure needs: Aries 7 is described as the first full lineup of PCIe 7 signal-conditioning chips covering both copper and optical links. These parts support data transmission from short circuit board distances to fiber connections exceeding 50 meters between racks. Intel and AMD have validated Astera's retimers since PCIe 4 and are currently collaborating with the company on the PCIe 7 transition. Samples of the Aries 7 chips are scheduled to ship this quarter.
The Orion reference design, unveiled at the Open Compute Project summit, allows cloud providers to select GPUs or CPUs based on cost or availability without requiring rack redesigns for future hardware swaps. The system scales to 160 accelerators per pod and targets neoclouds and enterprises serving AI inference workloads. Astera stated that the design helps customers deploy with "significantly lower upfront capex." Orion racks are expected to arrive through partners in the first quarter of 2027. Additionally, the company refreshed its Leo memory controllers for agentic AI workloads in September.
Investors should note that Astera Labs trades at a high trailing earnings multiple. PV Research reports that revenue relies on a short list of hyperscale customers, and the company's chairman sold $51 million of shares in September. The stock's 52-week price range spans $98 to $499. Astera reports third-quarter results on November 3. Management indicated in August that its Scorpio switch family would become the largest product line in the third quarter, a milestone reached one quarter earlier than originally planned.
