Australia head coach Tony Popovic directed pointed remarks at German referee Felix Zwayer following his side's 2-0 defeat to the United States in Seattle, a Group D result that leaves the Socceroos in second place on three points. A VAR reversal on the Americans' second goal and a seven-yellow-card altercation in the closing minutes sharpened the post-match tensions.
The Controversial Goal That Decided the Margin
The flashpoint arrived at the end of the 43rd minute. The USA converted from a free kick after the initial attempt was stopped; Alex Freeman, son of former NFL player Antonio Freeman, headed the ball in to make it 2-0. The goal was immediately flagged for offside and called back, but after a Video Assistant Referee review, the call was overturned and the score stood. Australian players protested, arguing their goalkeeper had been impeded.
Popovic did not name Zwayer directly but left little ambiguity. He told reporters he "wouldn't say" it was "the best day for the referee." Zwayer, 45, also drew attention late in the match when he pulled up with a cramp and required assistance from both USA forward Folarin Balogun and Australia's Aiden O'Neill to get back to his feet.
Physical Flare-Up Produces Seven Yellow Cards
Tensions broke into the open in the final stages when Australia's Harry Souttar grabbed Balogun in what television commentators described as a "rear naked choke." Zwayer intervened and issued yellow cards to Balogun, Souttar, and Australia's Jacob Italiano. Australia collected four yellow cards across the match in total; the United States received three.
Popovic Credits USA, Flags Australia's Flat Performance
Despite the officiating criticism, Popovic accepted responsibility for the performance. He said his players looked "sluggish" and "heavy-legged," noting the Americans "won every duel" and "every second ball," which made it difficult for Australia to build any momentum. He described the two goals conceded as "soft" and acknowledged that at this level of competition, giving away that much in the first half cannot be recovered.
Group D Standings and What Comes Next
The result moves the United States to first place in Group D with a perfect 2-0 record and six points. Australia sits second on three points. Both Paraguay and Turkey are winless on zero points and face each other Friday; a Paraguay win or draw would clinch the group for the USA and secure a favorable draw in the Round of 32. That match kicks off at 11 p.m. ET.
