Binance has committed $100 million to Circle Internet Group in a move that deepens the two firms' strategic alliance and aims to broaden the reach of the USDC stablecoin across emerging markets. The cryptocurrency exchange, identified by the ticker $BNB, and the stablecoin issuer, listed on the NYSE as CRCL, announced the expanded partnership on Monday.
The deal includes a new five-year commercial agreement focused on increasing access to USDC, Circle's dollar-pegged digital currency, in regions where traditional banking infrastructure may be limited. Binance executed the investment through a private placement of Circle's Class A common stock. The purchase price was set at a 5% discount to the market price before the closing of the transaction. To lock in the investment, Binance agreed to a restriction on transferring the acquired shares for up to two years from the closing date, with customary exceptions applying.
Under the terms of the commercial agreement, Binance will work to promote awareness of USDC and integrate the asset more widely across its platform. In return, Circle will provide infrastructure services that support the holding and use of USDC. The collaboration targets emerging markets specifically, with both companies citing an opportunity to expand dollar access and support savings and investment through digital asset products in those regions.
Jeremy Allaire, co-founder, chairman, and chief executive of Circle, highlighted Binance's position in the market, noting that it has built one of the world's largest platforms for using digital currency and operates the most widely used wallet for dollar stablecoins. Allaire stated that the partnership leverages USDC to facilitate financial inclusion in emerging economies.
Richard Teng, co-chief executive of Binance, described Circle as one of the most credible issuers globally, pointing to USDC, Arc, and the company's infrastructure for cross-border payments as key assets. Teng characterized the investment and the five-year commitment as a sign of long-term confidence in Circle. He added that the partnership is designed to make a stable, trusted digital dollar available to anyone with a smartphone.
Binance reports serving more than 300 million people across over 100 countries, claiming the top spot globally in trading volume and registered users. Circle's platform encompasses USDC, the Circle Payments Network for global money movement, and Arc, an enterprise blockchain intended to serve as an operating system for the internet economy.
