Cardano trades at $0.20 amid DeFi lag and missing ETFs
Cardano (CRYPTO: ADA) is trading at $0.20 in 2026, representing a 94% decline from its all-time high of nearly $3 in September 2021. Despite its previous status as a top-three cryptocurrency by market cap, the asset has struggled to maintain relevance against competitors like Ethereum and Solana.
The primary driver of this underperformance is Cardano's failure to establish a significant presence in decentralized finance (DeFi). While DeFi is considered a core area of the crypto economy, Cardano ranks 36th in total value locked (TVL), a key metric for measuring network strength. The network has also failed to gain traction in stablecoins and real-world asset (RWA) tokenization, two sectors identified as potential growth engines for the industry.
Performance data from 2026 highlights the widening gap between Cardano and its peers. While Ethereum is down 17% for the year and Solana is down 18%, Cardano has fallen 41%. This disparity reflects broader market sentiment, with investors increasingly shifting toward networks that demonstrate stronger adoption in DeFi niches.
A further structural disadvantage is the absence of spot Cardano ETFs. Major competitors, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, XRP, Dogecoin, and Zcash, currently offer spot ETFs. The lack of such products for Cardano limits its accessibility for both retail and institutional investors, potentially capping the inflows necessary for a significant price rebound.
Charles Hoskinson, the founder of Cardano, acknowledged the ecosystem's vulnerabilities in June by warning of an incoming "wave of failures" within the Cardano blockchain. While the asset is unlikely to reach zero, Hoskinson's comments underscore the risks associated with its current position. The combination of low TVL, poor year-to-date performance, and limited financial product support suggests that Cardano's low price reflects fundamental challenges rather than a temporary valuation error.
