Ciena (CIEN) reported $8.5 billion in backlog for the quarter ended August 1, 2026, as management confirmed that orders continue to significantly outpace sales. This accumulation of unshipped demand follows a period where revenue growth accelerated sharply, reaching 29.4% in the quarter ended August 2, 2025, driven by increased bandwidth requirements from cloud providers. The company expects its total backlog to exceed $10 billion by the end of fiscal year 2026.

The surge in demand reversed a prior period of stagnation. On its fiscal Q4 2024 call in December 2024, management noted that quarterly orders had risen above revenue levels, even as sales remained flat at $1.12 billion for the quarter ended November 2, 2024. At that time, Ciena held $2.1 billion in backlog. Management attributed the initial pause in shipments to customers working through accumulated inventory, a cycle that service providers largely completed by early 2025.

As inventory levels normalized, Ciena’s revenue growth picked up pace. In the quarter ended May 3, 2025, revenue rose 23.6% year over year. By the following quarter, growth had climbed to 29.4%. On its September 4, 2025, earnings call, management stated that revenue came in above the top end of its guidance. To support this expanding demand, particularly within data centers, Ciena agreed on September 22, 2025, to acquire Nubis Communications, a manufacturer of optical and electrical interconnects for AI workloads.

Financial performance has improved alongside the revenue gains. Ciena’s operating margin reached 18.1% in the quarter ended August 1, 2026, up from 6.2% in the same period the previous year. Management reported that direct cloud provider revenue grew over 80% during that quarter. These operational improvements have driven the stock’s performance; CIEN shares returned 101.5% from October 16, 2025, to October 19, 2026, outperforming the S&P 500’s 17.4% gain over the same period.

The valuation for these gains has increased significantly. Investors now pay 74.7 times Ciena’s trailing twelve-month earnings, compared to a multiple of 22.9 for the S&P 500. During the same measurement window, peers Cisco Systems, Arista Networks, and Broadcom all underperformed Ciena, with the highest return among them standing at 57.0%. The next key data point for investors is Ciena’s fiscal fourth-quarter report, expected on or around December 9, 2026.
