The Lansing Police Department is investigating five deaths linked to the Lansing River Trail over the past year, with officials stating a suspect may have targeted and attacked individuals at night. Michigan State University has responded by fortifying security on the university portion of the trail, citing growing safety concerns among students.

The investigation centers on a potential serial killer operating near the campus. Among the five victims, the youngest was Daniel Lusk, 22, who was found fatally stabbed under the East Michigan Avenue bridge on August 20. The location is less than a mile from the university grounds. Police arrested Edward Joseph Smith, 23, on September 3 in connection with Lusk's stabbing. Smith has not been accused of involvement in the other four deaths.

The Lansing Police Department stated that all five victims appear to be homeless White men. The investigation remains active and ongoing. Lansing Mayor Andy Schor addressed the situation in a statement to Fox News Digital, asserting that the river trail and downtown area remain safe for residents and visitors. Schor noted that the police department has significantly increased its presence in these areas during all hours of the day and night.

In response to the incidents, the Michigan State University Department of Police and Public Safety announced upgraded security measures for its section of the trail. A spokesperson for the department told Fox News Digital that these enhancements include additional LED lighting, Green Light emergency phones equipped with public safety cameras, and routine bike patrols by MSU police officers. The department encouraged students using the trail to remain aware of their surroundings and take reasonable precautions, particularly when out at night.
