Maine Senate candidates trade sharp words during interrupted debate

Maine Republican Sen. Susan Collins and Democratic challenger Troy Jackson exchanged pointed remarks during a Thursday night debate that was disrupted by a loud protest. Collins identified the interrupter as likely one of Jackson's supporters, prompting Jackson to retort, "Oh, shut up. I don't even know that kid." The exchange marked a notably sharp turn in a series of tense debates between the two candidates, who are competing in a race that could determine the Senate majority.

Earlier in the program, a moderator asked Collins to cite an instance where her opposition to President Trump altered a political outcome. Collins referenced her organization of efforts to vote against the confirmation of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. She stated that at the last minute, one Republican changed his mind, allowing Hegseth to secure the position. Collins identified that senator as Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), who has described his eventual vote for Hegseth as the "biggest regret of my career." The moderator followed up by noting that the change in votes meant the outcome was not changed.
