Micah Parsons says Jayden Daniels likely cost Dan Quinn his Commanders job
Green Bay Packers defensive end Micah Parsons claimed that Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels likely cost head coach Dan Quinn his position after a Week 5 tie against the New York Giants. The dispute centers on Daniels taking a sack instead of throwing the ball out of bounds during overtime, which resulted in a 27-27 final score.
The Commanders surrendered a lead they held for most of the game, with Giants wide receiver Malik Nabers scoring a fourth-quarter touchdown to force extra time. A potential game-winning sequence ended when Giants running back Cam Skattebo fumbled a run play in field goal range. Although Giants kicker Dominic Zvada missed a 46-yard field goal attempt on the opening overtime drive, the final play sealed the tie.
On "The Edge with Micah Parsons," Parsons stated that Daniels' decision was inexcusable for a player in his third season. "Jayden Daniels probably cost my man Dan Quinn his job, to be honest with you," Parsons said. He noted that while he is a fan of Daniels, the lack of urgency after being sacked with 14 seconds remaining and no timeouts left was unacceptable for an NFL veteran who has reached the NFC Championship Game.
Quinn and Daniels had previously worked together when Quinn served as the Dallas Cowboys' defensive coordinator from 2021 to 2023. Quinn defended his quarterback after the game, stating that the blame for the situation "does not fall on" Daniels. However, Commanders left guard Chris Paul told 7News DC that the team had discussed the lack of timeouts in the huddle before the snap.
Daniels accepted responsibility for the outcome, acknowledging that the offense needed to communicate the situation better from the top down and that he ultimately bore the fault. This was his first game back since dislocating his left elbow again in Week 2 against the Cowboys. Despite the injury, Daniels performed well offensively, rushing for 103 yards and two touchdowns while completing 17 of 25 passes for 199 yards.
The Commanders currently sit at the bottom of the NFC East division with a record of 1-3-1. A victory would have improved their record to 2-3, matching the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles. Parsons argued that teammates who did not react urgently to the sack also share fault, but maintained that the quarterback's decision to take the hit rather than throw away the ball was the primary error.
