BigBear.ai (BBAI) shares climbed 4.35% to close at $2.40 on Tuesday, following the company's announcement of more than $225 million in new contract awards. The stock had surged as much as 11.7% earlier in the session before easing off its intraday high.

The company reported securing these awards since July, a development that includes 25 new generative AI contracts with federal agencies. Among the recipients of these awards are the FBI, NASA, the U.S. Coast Guard, the Department of Energy, and the Department of Veterans Affairs. Management stated that these additions reinforce the company's federal backlog story.

Trading activity reflected the heightened investor interest, with volume exceeding 35 million shares. This figure represented an increase of approximately 78% above the three-month average of 19.7 million shares. The stock's performance stands in contrast to its broader history since its 2021 initial public offering, where it has declined 76% from its listing price.

The latest contract wins follow a period of financial recovery for the company. In the second quarter, BigBear.ai reported revenue growth of 13% year over year to $36.7 million. This improvement contrasts with full-year 2024 results, where revenue fell 19.3% to $127.7 million due to federal budget cuts. The company credits the acquisition of Ask Sage, an AI platform designed for government agencies, as a primary driver of its recent operational success.

BigBear.ai generates more than 50% of its revenue from a limited number of key customers, including major contracts with the U.S. Department of War and other federal agencies. The concentration of this revenue base remains a defining characteristic of its business model as it scales its AI offerings.

In the broader market, the S&P 500 slipped 0.02% to close at 7,805, while the Nasdaq Composite fell 0.15% to 27,204. Peer performance was mixed; Palantir Technologies (PLTR) decreased by 0.16% to $208.67, whereas Science Applications International (SAIC) rose by 0.20% to $133.31.

Investors will turn their attention to BigBear.ai's upcoming earnings release on October 27. Market participants are monitoring this date for specific guidance and backlog commentary to determine if the recent contract wins support the company's forward-looking outlook.
