StockStory, a market research platform, identified AbbVie as the sole S&P 500 constituent with competitive advantages in its latest review, while flagging Starbucks and Zimmer Biomet as names to avoid. The analysis contrasts the operational resilience of the biopharmaceutical giant with the stagnating trends observed in the coffeehouse and orthopedic sectors.

AbbVie (NYSE:ABBV), which emerged from a 2013 spinoff of Abbott Laboratories' pharmaceutical business, holds a market capitalization of $484.8 billion. The company develops and markets medications for autoimmune diseases, cancer, and neurological disorders. StockStory attributes AbbVie's positive outlook to a massive revenue base of $64.39 billion, which provides significant negotiating power in a highly regulated sector. The firm describes AbbVie as a "free cash flow machine" with the flexibility to fund growth or return capital to shareholders. Management's ability to generate market-beating returns on capital further supports the bullish case. At $274.75 per share, AbbVie trades at a forward P/E of 18.6x.

In contrast, Starbucks (NASDAQ:SBUX), founded in Seattle's Pike Place Market, faces headwinds despite a $104.9 billion market cap. The platform notes that weak same-store sales over the past two years suggest limited opportunities for new store openings in core markets. A projected 1.9% sales decline for the next 12 months indicates a tough demand environment. Additionally, operating margins fell by 3 percentage points over the last year as day-to-day expenses swelled relative to revenue. Starbucks currently trades at $91.86 per share, representing a forward P/E of 31.5x.

Zimmer Biomet (NYSE:ZBH), an orthopedic product manufacturer with a history dating back to 1927, also drew criticism from StockStory. The company designs knee and hip replacements and robotic technologies for joint reconstruction, operating in over 100 countries with a market cap of $17.56 billion. However, its sales trends were described as unexciting over the last five years, with annual growth of 4.4% lagging the typical healthcare company. Earnings per share grew at an annual rate of 2.4%, failing to keep pace with revenue gains, while below-average returns on capital suggested management struggled to find compelling investment opportunities. Zimmer Biomet shares are priced at $91.48, or 10.5x forward P/E.
