US and European Stock Indices Close Lower Thursday

In contrast, the Dow Jones 15 Utilities index rose 23.71 points to close at 1105.1, and the Dow Jones 20 Transportation index increased 371.87 points to 20294.43. The Dow Jones 30 Industrials index edged higher by 11.89 points to close at 52867.98.
European indices also declined on the day. The MIB (Milan) index fell 1473.52 points to close at 48383.66. The FT-100 (London) index dropped 27.85 points to 10725.03, and the SMI (Zurich) index closed at 14552.39, a decrease of 4.42 points.
