The contract machinery moved on schedule. Less than 48 hours before the New England Patriots departed for the regular-season opener at Seattle on Wednesday evening, Christian Gonzalez agreed to a four-year extension worth $135 million, including $102 million in guaranteed money, at $33.75 million per season. Los Angeles Rams cornerback Trent McDuffie signed in March at $31 million per season. Cleveland Browns cornerback Denzel Ward followed in late July at $31.1 million. Seattle Seahawks cornerback Devon Witherspoon agreed in mid-August at $33 million per season. Each deal nudged the ceiling upward, and the market moved four times in roughly six months with no retreat at any step.

Robert Kraft said during training camp that the team had already made Gonzalez an offer that would set a new record for the position, and that the deal would be the highest contract in Patriots franchise history. When Witherspoon's number landed in mid-August, that offer needed adjusting upward. The final figure, $33.75 million per season, clears Witherspoon's average by $750,000.

NFL deadlines do the logistical work in situations like this. The Patriots were scheduled to leave for Seattle on Tuesday, and going into the regular-season opener with the contract unresolved would have created friction for both sides. The calendar collapsed the timeline in exactly the way the economics had already predicted it would.
