Rivian Automotive (RIVN) reported record third-quarter deliveries on October 2, 2026, following the rollout of its R2 SUV. Management stated that the R2 is designed to reach a positive gross profit as 2026 ends, a milestone intended to shift the company's vehicle business toward profitability. The stock declined 17.7% from September 22 to October 21, while the S&P 500 remained roughly flat during the same period.

Rivian’s car business posted a gross loss of $36 million in the June quarter of 2026, a significant reduction from the $335 million loss recorded a year earlier. Management attributed approximately $100 million of the quarter’s costs to the start of R2 production. Currently, Rivian’s overall profitability relies on its software and services division, which generated a gross profit of $215 million in the June quarter with a 42% margin. The company’s joint venture with Volkswagen Group accounted for 60% of revenue in that segment.

Investors are valuing Rivian based on sales rather than earnings, as the company continues to report operating losses. The stock trades at 2.8 times its sales over the last four reported quarters, compared with 3.1 for the S&P 500. Over that same four-quarter period, Rivian’s operating expenses exceeded its sales by 60.1%, whereas the S&P 500 maintained an operating margin of 18.5%. These losses have consumed cash; Rivian’s free cash flow was negative $3.49 billion over the same period, measured against $5.31 billion in cash and short-term investments held at the end of June. In July, the company sold new shares to raise about $1.3 billion, which diluted the stake of existing shareholders.

Management projects deliveries between 65,000 and 70,000 units for 2026. The company operates plants in Normal, Illinois, and Georgia, which provide a path to an annual capacity of 515,000 units. The strategy relies on spreading fixed costs across higher R2 volumes to achieve gross profit. However, management warned on the July 30, 2026 earnings call that the R2 launch would pressure gross profit in the third quarter before becoming a benefit in the fourth. The third quarter marks the first period to absorb a full three months of R2 ramp costs.

Supply chain constraints present a risk to this timeline. Management noted that R2 output is gated by the slowest-moving of hundreds of suppliers, requiring all partners to scale at the same rate. Rivian is expected to report its third-quarter results on October 29, 2026. The key metric for investors will be the gross profit of the car business, specifically whether management maintains its expectation that R2 will reach positive gross profit by the end of 2026.
