Coinbase Global (COIN) expects subscription and services revenue to fall in the third quarter, guiding for approximately $540 million after reporting $555 million in the second quarter of 2026. The company issued this outlook alongside its second-quarter results on July 30, 2026, signaling a slight contraction in a segment that generated roughly half of its total revenue for the period.

The guidance arrives as the company navigates a period of financial contraction. Coinbase stock has declined 53% over the past twelve months, a steeper drop than the 17.3% return of the S&P 500 over the same stretch. Business operations also shrank, with second-quarter revenue falling 18.5% year over year. Management’s forward-looking figures suggest the revenue slide is not yet over, as the projected third-quarter subscription income represents a decrease from the previous quarter.

During the earnings call, executives addressed questions regarding the impact of Coinbase One, its paid membership program, on per-trade earnings. Management stated that members are worth more to the company on average, though they noted that revenue may shift between different lines of the income statement. The company also lowered its 2026 adjusted expense guide to about $4.33 billion from $4.42 billion, indicating a tighter spending plan for the year.

While the top line contracts, the company’s balance sheet provides a significant buffer against losses. If Coinbase were to repeat its second-quarter performance for a full year, it would incur a loss of approximately $1.4 billion. However, this figure is largely driven by non-operating items; day-to-day operations ran close to break-even in the second quarter. The company holds $9.0 billion in cash and short-term investments, an amount more than six times larger than that hypothetical annual loss. Even after repaying its $6.7 billion in debt, Coinbase would retain $2.3 billion, which exceeds the size of a year’s losses at that level.

Cash flow remains positive despite the reported net losses. Over the last twelve months, Coinbase’s operations generated $1.7 billion in cash, even as the company reported a net loss of $1.0 billion for the period. On an annualized basis based on the second quarter, revenue would be $4.9 billion, down from $6.3 billion over the trailing twelve months. Operating margins have compressed significantly, narrowing to 11.7% from 27% a year earlier.

Management cited early adoption signals for newer products as potential stabilizers. On the July 30 call, executives reported good adoption of prediction markets and perpetual futures, noting that customers using these new products are also adding to spot trading volume. Separately, The Wall Street Journal reported on September 28, 2026, that Coinbase will help Citi’s corporate clients make payments with stablecoins.

Investors will focus on specific metrics management has outlined for the upcoming period. The firm projects third-quarter adjusted expenses near $1.03 billion and subscription services income around $540 million. The latter figure serves as the key indicator to monitor when Coinbase releases its third-quarter results to determine if the revenue decline persists.
