Fox News poll finds Black voters more supportive of Israel than other groups
A recent Fox News poll indicates African-American voters are the demographic group most likely to assert that the United States does not provide sufficient support for Israel, a finding that contrasts with recent public commentary from prominent political figures. In the survey, 25% of African-American respondents said the U.S. is not supportive enough of Israel, compared with 19% of Hispanic voters and 15% of White voters. The data also revealed that African-Americans were the least likely group to agree that America is too supportive of Israel, with 40% disagreeing with that sentiment, whereas 44% of White voters and 56% of Hispanic voters held that view.

These polling results emerged as former President Barack Obama and former Vice President Kamala Harris made public statements regarding the conflict in Gaza and Israel. Obama, who was in Northern Ireland, accused Israel of taking Palestine from Palestinians during the Jewish nation's founding in 1948, according to a report by the Jerusalem Post. Harris spoke at a conference in Korea, criticizing both the current administration and President Biden for failing to use leverage to curtail what she described as the Israeli government's horrific conduct in the war in Gaza.
The political commentary coincides with the midterm election cycle, where Black voters are emerging as influential in Democratic efforts to retake Congress. The most consequential race cited is in Michigan, where Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed is competing against Republican challenger Mike Rogers. Jewish voters in Michigan, who number around 130,000, may be less inclined to support El-Sayed due to his alignment with Islamist groups and previous statements. Conversely, Black support for El-Sayed is described as lower than desired, with some African-American residents feeling overlooked by his campaign's focus on Israel and Palestine.
Harris campaigned with El-Sayed in Michigan in late September, an effort intended to rally Black support. Obama is scheduled to visit Detroit this weekend. Ta-Nehisi Coates, who appeared on a Vanity Fair podcast, also attributed Harris' 2024 defeat to her unwillingness to speak out more forcefully against U.S. engagement in Gaza.
The Fox News poll data stands against the notion that African-Americans organically align with the Palestinian experience due to shared experiences of injustice. Black voters have more pressing domestic concerns, such as homicide rates and unemployment figures that are roughly twice those of their white counterparts, rather than focusing on Middle East conflicts.
