Michigan head coach Kyle Whittingham turned to freshman quarterback Tommy Carr in the second half, and Carr's physical play carried the Wolverines to a victory over Penn State. The win improves Michigan's record in Big Ten play, while Penn State head coach Matt Campbell's Nittany Lions fell to 3-3 overall.
The game began with Penn State kicker Ryan Barker booting a 24-yard field goal to give the visitors the early lead. The Nittany Lions controlled the ball for nearly two-thirds of the first half, but their offense stalled in the red zone. Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood threw two interceptions in the first half, including one picked off by Penn State freshman Josiah Zayas. With the offense struggling, Whittingham brought in Carr, who received a loud ovation from fans at Michigan Stadium.
Carr's initial drive ended quickly with a three-and-out, but the momentum shifted when Penn State quarterback Rocco Becht threw an interception on the next play. Carr capitalized on the turnover from just past midfield. Running back Bryson Kuzdzal broke free for a 43-yard touchdown run to give Michigan the lead. Later in the quarter, Carr rushed up to the Penn State 1-yard line on a play that was initially ruled a touchdown but was overturned after review. Running back Jordan Marshall then forced his way across the goal line for six yards.
Penn State scored a touchdown early in the fourth quarter and converted on a two-point attempt to close the gap to one field goal. With five minutes remaining, Becht was sacked while scrambling and fumbled the ball, which Michigan recovered. Carr scored his first career touchdown on a 12-yard run shortly after the turnover. Becht later connected with wide receiver Chase Sowell for a touchdown, giving Penn State a chance to tie or take the lead. Sowell finished the game with 11 catches for 151 yards.
The game ended when Michigan recovered Penn State's onside kick attempt. Carr completed 5 of 7 passes for 47 yards, all of which occurred in the second half. The result provides a significant boost for Michigan, which will face defending champion Indiana next. Penn State will have a week off before hosting Purdue on Halloween.
