Google rolls out Universal Cart for U.S. shoppers
Google began rolling out Universal Cart to U.S. users on Oct. 15, introducing an artificial intelligence-powered tool that consolidates products from multiple retailers into a single digital space. The feature is currently available across Google Search and the Gemini app, though the company noted that availability may vary as the rollout continues. Universal Cart allows shoppers to save supported items discovered through these platforms, keeping them accessible for future review without requiring an immediate purchase decision.
The system relies on Google's Shopping Graph, which contains more than 60 billion continually refreshed product listings. This database enables the tool to monitor price fluctuations and inventory availability across supported products. Users can receive notifications when a saved item experiences a price drop or when a sold-out product becomes available again. While these alerts may be particularly useful during the upcoming holiday shopping season, a price reduction does not automatically guarantee the lowest price available.
Google has integrated Universal Cart with its payment infrastructure to assist with checkout. The tool uses information from Google Wallet to identify supported credit card benefits and surface relevant promotional codes directly within the cart. This functionality aims to help users select payment methods that maximize rewards or apply discounts they might otherwise miss. However, specific reward conditions should be checked, as the highest points offer may not always translate into the greatest financial savings.
Participating retailers for streamlined checkout experiences include Nike, Sephora, Target, Ulta Beauty, Walmart, and Wayfair, along with many Shopify merchants. In some cases, users can complete purchases directly through Google Pay from the cart. In other instances, Google transfers selected items to the retailer's website for finalization. Regardless of the checkout method, the retailer remains the seller of record and handles order confirmations, delivery questions, and customer support.
Behind the scenes, Google utilizes the Universal Commerce Protocol, or UCP, a shared technical standard designed to facilitate communication between AI-powered shopping tools and retailers. This protocol connects product discovery with checkout processes, reducing the need for users to navigate between different shopping experiences. Google originally previewed Universal Cart in May 2026 with plans to integrate it into Search, Gemini, YouTube, and Gmail. The Oct. 15 announcement specifically confirmed availability for Search and Gemini in the U.S., but the company has not announced a confirmed launch date for integration with Gmail or YouTube.
The tool's functionality depends on supported shopping experiences, meaning not every online store supports every feature. The appearance and placement of these features may vary by device, as Google has not provided a single set of instructions that applies universally. While the feature aims to simplify organization and savings, Google's launch materials lack clarity on data retention periods or specific advertising applications for cart activity.
Competitors are also developing similar capabilities. Amazon has been working on AI-powered shopping tools, while OpenAI offers AI agents that can assist with shopping-related tasks. Google has also expanded its AI shopping efforts with its Let Google Call feature, which uses AI to contact nearby stores to check product availability. As these tools become more integrated into daily routines, users are advised to review their privacy settings and verify final prices before completing purchases.
