UMass answered and closed out the 37-21 final. The Minutemen had not won a game since October 26, 2024, going without a victory throughout the entire 2025 season.

The loss lands against a real body of work. Schiano returned to Rutgers before the 2020 season, had Michigan in trouble in November of that year, and built a program that beat Miami (FL) in the 2023 Pinstripe Bowl and knocked off Washington at home in 2024. In non-conference play, the Scarlet Knights had wins over Ohio, Miami (Ohio), and Norfolk State in 2025; Howard, Akron, and Virginia Tech to open 2024; and Temple, Virginia Tech, and Howard in 2023. The program had not dropped a non-conference regular-season game since falling to Boston College in 2019. That is the standard Thursday's result is measured against.

The energy Schiano built at Shi Stadium once drew figures like James Gandolfini to Piscataway. Thursday put the program's current standing in a harder frame.

Rutgers heads to Boston College next week. The last non-conference regular-season loss before Thursday, in 2019, also came against Boston College.
