Super Micro Computer (SMCI) recorded more than $60 billion in new orders during its fiscal Q4 2026, a volume that pushed the company's total backlog to a record level. Super Micro Computer (SMCI) recorded more than $60 billion in new orders during its fiscal Q4 2026, a volume that pushed the company's total backlog to a record level. This surge in demand coincided with a period where the stock returned 65.7% between April 12 and October 9, 2026, significantly outpacing the 15.2% gain seen in the S&P 500 over the same interval.

The company's revenue trajectory shows sharp acceleration. In early May, Super Micro reported fiscal Q3 2026 revenue of $10.24 billion, a 123% increase from the prior year. Following the August 11 quarterly update, executives detailed fiscal Q4 2026 revenue of $11.1 billion, representing a 93% year-over-year rise. While these figures indicate strong top-line growth, management noted that revenue for the fourth quarter landed near the low end of their previous guidance. Executives attributed this shortfall to short-term delays at customers whose power and cooling infrastructure was not ready, stating they expect to recognize that delayed revenue in later quarters.

Profitability metrics present a mixed picture for investors. Over the last twelve months, Super Micro’s gross margin stood at 10.8%, down from 18.0% three years ago. However, the adjusted gross margin for fiscal Q4 2026 reached 17.6%. Management indicated that about 75% of the 750 basis point improvement from the previous quarter resulted from a better customer and product mix. The remaining 25% stemmed from lower tariff costs and reduced inventory reserves, which the company described as potentially a one-time benefit.

Looking ahead to fiscal 2027, executives provided sales guidance ranging from $65 billion to $72 billion. This forecast is approximately two-thirds higher than the $39.1 billion in sales generated over the last twelve months. Given that server and storage systems accounted for 97% of fiscal 2025 revenue, this guidance covers nearly the entirety of Super Micro's business. For the upcoming fiscal Q1 2027, management guided for a gross margin of 10.4% to 10.8%, a range significantly below the adjusted 17.6% achieved in the fourth quarter.

Cash flow dynamics remain a point of scrutiny despite recent improvements. Over the last twelve months, Super Micro earned $2.2 billion but used $6.8 billion in cash for operations. The most recent quarter showed a reversal, with operations providing $747 million in cash during fiscal Q4 2026 after consuming $6.6 billion in the preceding quarter. This historical cash burn may contribute to why investors value the stock at 11.5 times earnings, compared to the S&P 500's multiple of 21.9.

The broader server sector has experienced similar strength, with Dell Technologies and Hewlett Packard Enterprise each returning more than 190% over the same six-month period. Fiscal Q1 2027 results are currently pending, and any final margin figure well above the guided range would suggest that the improved product mix from the fourth quarter is sustaining itself.
