US equity indexes advanced Monday as government bond yields surged to their highest levels in more than two decades and crude oil prices fell. The Nasdaq Composite (IXIC) led the gains, climbing 1.2% to close at 27,527.8 after touching an all-time high earlier in the session. The S&P 500 (SPX) rose 0.9% to 7,788.1, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJI) added 0.3% to finish at 51,339.2.

Sector performance was broadly positive, with materials and communication services leading the advance. Real estate was the only sector to decline. In the bond market, yields rose across the curve, with the mid-to-long end outpacing shorter maturities and steepening the yield curve. The 30-year Treasury yield jumped 3.4 basis points to 5.66%, its highest level since 2002. The 10-year yield also climbed 3.4 basis points to 5.31%, matching its strongest level since 2002. The 2-year yield saw a more modest increase of less than one basis point, ending at 4.83%.

Geopolitical developments in the Middle East contributed to the market environment. Saudi Arabia-backed Yemeni government forces advanced on Monday to retake coastal areas around the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a chokepoint comparable to the Strait of Hormuz, Reuters reported. The military push pushed Iran-backed Houthi forces out of most areas they had seized in September. Separately, Iran's Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni traveled to Doha at the invitation of his Qatari counterpart, Al Jazeera reported. Citing Iran's Tasnim news agency, the outlet stated Momeni is scheduled to meet Interior Minister Sheikh Khalid bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani during the visit. Mediation efforts by Qatar continue to restart talks between Tehran and Washington, despite repeated attacks following US and Israeli strikes on Iran.

Crude oil prices declined amid these developments. The front-month US West Texas Intermediate contract dropped 2.3% to $89.03 per barrel. The global benchmark North Sea Brent crude declined 2.2% to close at $100.00 per barrel.
