USC suspends Desman Stephens for targeting hit on Dante Moore

USC head coach Lincoln Riley suspended linebacker Desman Stephens for one game following a late hit on Oregon quarterback Dante Moore during Saturday's match. The Trojans lost the contest 20-41 to the Oregon Ducks, with the incident occurring in the second quarter. Moore was scrambling for additional yardage and appeared to be sliding when Stephens made contact directly with his head. The junior was ejected from the game for targeting, and Moore was stretchered off the field. Riley announced the suspension on Sunday, stating that Stephens' actions were unacceptable and did not reflect USC Football or the player's personal character. Riley added that Stephens understands his mistake, accepts the consequences, and will learn from the experience. The coach also wished Moore and his family a full recovery. Stephens issued a statement apologizing for his conduct during the game. He described seeing a player injured in that manner as incredibly serious and called his immediate reaction completely inappropriate and inexcusable. Stephens took full responsibility for smiling or celebrating while Moore received medical attention, noting that no justification existed for such a response. He expressed deep regret to Moore, his family, and everyone who witnessed the incident, affirming that his behavior was not representative of USC or its program. Oregon head coach Dan Lanning labeled the hit disgusting. Stephens will miss USC's upcoming game against Washington this coming Saturday.
