The game turned on a brutal hit to Moore's head by a USC linebacker, which forced him off the field and required backup Dylan Raiola to take over the offense. Oregon fell behind early but pulled away in the fourth quarter. Lanning praised Raiola's decision-making and noted that the team's preparation led them to kick a field goal just before halftime rather than attempting a touchdown. The Ducks' offensive performance contrasted sharply with their previous loss to Oklahoma State, where they managed only 281 yards of offense against 554 from the Cowboys.

For USC, the result compounded a disappointing start to the 2026 season. The Trojans had previously suffered underwhelming performances against San Jose State, Louisiana, and Rutgers. Riley is now on his third defensive coordinator in five seasons in Los Angeles. The program has failed to produce a top-15 defensive unit during his tenure, despite bringing in highly recruited players like Jakheem Stewart and Luke Wafle. USC's offense has ranked in the top five by analytics-based metrics, but defensive lapses on critical downs have defined their recent games. The Trojans face a challenging stretch ahead with scheduled games against Ohio State, Indiana, Penn State, Wisconsin, and UCLA.
