The Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (VOO) carries a technology sector weight of 39.7 percent of its total asset base, a concentration that exceeds the combined share of its second- and third-largest sectors. The fund, which holds $1.7 trillion in total assets, tracks the S&P 500 index and charges an expense ratio of 0.03 percent.

This market-cap weighting means that company size dictates influence over portfolio performance. Financials and communication services, the next largest sectors, combine for a 21.3 percent share. The disparity between the leading tech sector and the rest of the index creates a risk profile where the performance of a single group of companies ripples through the entire ETF.

Investors in VOO are effectively making a bullish bet on artificial intelligence. Top holdings include Nvidia, Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, and Meta Platforms, which together account for 25.8 percent of the portfolio. These companies, previously noted for generating free cash flow, are now allocating significant capital to AI data center build-outs. Spending among hyperscalers is expected to exceed $1 trillion in 2027, though the long-term payout remains unknown.

The fund has generated a total return of 323 percent over the past decade as of October 21, growing a $1,000 investment into $4,230. While this performance has been strong over the last ten years, the high tech concentration implies that a rough stretch in that sector could be a major drag on the portfolio.
