Canadian Defense Minister David McGuinty confirmed fatalities and injuries following an incident that sparked a major fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta on Saturday. The minister did not specify the number of people killed or injured in the initial announcement.

McGuinty described the event as a serious incident, stating that he could not recall a similar occurrence in recent memory. He noted that the fire was still burning on Saturday evening. The municipality of Wainwright reported that the flames had spread beyond the military base's perimeter into the surrounding area, although local officials stated that no evacuation orders had been issued.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney addressed the situation in a post on X, describing a "serious incident creating a major fire" at the base. He expressed that his thoughts were with the affected military personnel. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith also posted on X, characterizing the event as a "significant and tragic fire" that impacted military personnel stationed at the facility.

The Canadian Armed Forces, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and local emergency personnel responded to the scene, according to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. McGuinty said that the Department of National Defence and federal partners, including public safety agencies, were coordinating with the government of Alberta and municipal governments to mobilize necessary support.

Canadian Forces Base Wainwright is located roughly 130 miles east of Edmonton. It is a major Army training installation that housed approximately 1,310 military and civilian personnel in 2021, according to census figures cited by Reuters. The nearby town of Wainwright is home to roughly 6,600 residents.

The cause of the incident was not immediately clear.
