Fox News Power Rankings have shifted the Oregon governor's race from Likely Democrat to Lean Democrat, signaling a tightening contest between Democratic Gov. Tina Kotek and Republican Christine Drazan. The update reflects a competitive political environment in the blue-leaning state, where voters are focused on local burdens like housing costs and homelessness, giving Republicans a chance to break their long losing streak in gubernatorial elections.

The shift occurs despite a challenging national political environment marked by high gas and diesel prices, polls indicating an unpopular war in Iran, and President Donald Trump's low approval ratings. Drazan, a former Republican leader in the Oregon House, stated in a Fox News Digital interview that her campaign is attempting something historic. "It's been a long time and we're due we win," Drazan said.

Oregon has historically favored Democrats in presidential and senate races. Then-Vice President Kamala Harris carried the state by 14 points in the 2024 presidential election, and Democratic Sen. Ron Wyden won his 2022 re-election by 15 points. However, gubernatorial contests in the northwestern state have traditionally been closer. Drazan lost to Kotek by less than four points in 2022. Following that defeat, she won a state House election in 2024, returned to the legislature as minority leader, and was appointed to the state Senate last year.

Drazan emphasized her continued presence in Oregon politics, telling Fox News Digital that she did not move to another state or hide after her 2022 loss. "I got engaged again, went back into the legislature to serve my community," Drazan said. Recent public opinion polls indicate the rematch is within the margin of error. Drazan argued that voters are recognizing her leadership and focusing on local struggles rather than national issues. "We're struggling right now locally. So, that's making this race tight," she said.

The Kotek campaign is attempting to link Drazan to President Trump, who is unpopular in the state. Federico Araujo, Kotek's Communications Director, told Fox News Digital that undecided voters will support Kotek to protect Oregonians from federal overreach. "Christine Drazan is ready to open the door to Trump's agenda," Araujo said.

Drazan countered that single-party control has not benefited Oregon and that the state needs balance to address economic and social challenges. She criticized Kotek for lacking solutions for issues such as addiction and homelessness. While national Republicans face headwinds in retaining congressional majorities and governorships, Drazan said her campaign is receiving financial support from the Republican Governors Association. "They are investing in this race now," Drazan said, though she noted that Kotek holds a significant fundraising advantage.

Johanna Warshaw, a spokesperson for the Democratic Governors Association, expressed confidence in Kotek's victory. Warshaw claimed that the Republican Governors Association is leaving Drazan's campaign out to dry due to its lack of funds. Drazan responded that she is actively fundraising and noted that Oregon has no spending limits, allowing her to compete head-to-head. "I want to achieve something extraordinary," Drazan said.
