The Oakland Raiders announced Saturday that former standout Pete Banaszak has died at the age of 82. The 13-year veteran, who played a pivotal role in the franchise's first Super Bowl victory, is being remembered by the team for his toughness and competitive spirit.
In a statement released Saturday, the Raiders said Banaszak's dedication embodied a legendary era of football. The organization highlighted his deep pride in his Polish heritage, noting that he was inducted into the National Polish-American Sports Hall of Fame in 1990. The team extended its condolences to Banaszak's wife, Sue, and his daughters, Rebecca and Amy, as well as his grandsons, Luke, Austin, and Connor.
Banaszak spent his entire 13-season NFL career with the Raiders, making his final appearance in 1978. Although he served primarily as a reserve, starting just 36 of the 173 games he played, he established himself as a key figure in team history. His most productive year came in 1975, when he rushed for a league-high 16 touchdowns and a career-best 672 yards. The 16 rushing touchdowns remain a single-season record for the franchise.
His legacy is most closely tied to the Raiders' Super Bowl XI victory over the Minnesota Vikings, the first time the team won the Vince Lombardi Trophy. Banaszak crossed the goal line twice during that game. He also played a critical role in one of the league's most famous plays, known as the "Holy Roller." In Week 2 of his final season, the Raiders trailed the Chargers 20-14 with seconds remaining. When Ken Stabler fumbled while appearing to be sacked, Banaszak recovered the ball and batted it forward to tight end Dave Casper in the end zone. The extra point secured an improbable 21-20 win for Oakland.
Over his career, Banaszak accumulated 3,772 rushing yards, 1,022 receiving yards, and 52 touchdowns. He is also credited with six touchdowns in playoff games.
