Josh Duhamel credits testosterone therapy for improved health at 53

Actor Josh Duhamel attributes his current physical vitality at age 53 to testosterone replacement therapy (TRT), which he began approximately five years ago. The "Transformers" star stated during an appearance on Dave Asprey's "The Human Upgrade" podcast that he feels better now than he did in his early to mid-30s, citing improvements in joint health, back pain, and knee function. Duhamel described feeling stronger overall as a result of the treatment.

Duhamel disclosed that he started TRT after medical tests revealed low testosterone levels in his early 40s. He noted that initial attempts to source the hormone were inconsistent, but he eventually found a regimen that restored the energy he felt he had lost during his 20s and 30s. The actor explained that he now injects testosterone three times a week to maintain consistent levels in his body.

Following his personal experience, Duhamel co-founded Gatlan, a men's health company that provides physician-guided testosterone replacement, hormone optimization, weight loss, and longevity treatments. He said the decision to launch the business was not without professional resistance. Duhamel recalled that his former representatives advised against the venture, warning that becoming the public face of a controversial treatment could harm his Hollywood career. "They said, 'Don't do it. It's bad for your image,'" Duhamel said. "And I was like, 'Alright, watch.'"

Despite the warnings, Duhamel proceeded with Gatlan, stating his motivation was to address a lack of public information on a practice he believed was already widespread among men. "Nobody's talking about it. Everybody's doing it," he observed. He expressed hope that the growing willingness to discuss hormone therapy would help normalize the conversation.

Duhamel emphasized that his primary drive is to remain physically capable for his role as a father of three. He is married to Audra Mari, 32, and they welcomed their second child together, daughter Rocca de Leon Duhamel, in May 2026. The couple also has a son, Shepherd, who is now two years old. Duhamel additionally shares son Axl, 13, with ex-wife Fergie, 51. He described the current parenting phase as demanding but stated that TRT provides the energy necessary to keep up with daily tasks such as diaper changes and potty training.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved testosterone products for men with low testosterone associated with specific medical conditions. The agency requires these products to carry warnings regarding increased blood pressure. Duhamel advised that patients consult their doctors regarding the potential benefits and risks of treatment.

Duhamel framed his use of TRT as a strategy for longevity, stating he wants to remain healthy for as long as possible to see his future grandchildren. He argued that hormone optimization should be part of a broader discussion on aging for both men and women, encouraging individuals to explore medically backed options with their physicians.
